Causes of the Duck Plague

Another name for duck plague is duck virus enteritis. This disease is a deadly disease of ducks caused by a type of virus of the Herpes group. In 1923, this disease was first identified in the Netherlands.

Subsequently, this disease has been adopted in France, Germany, America, India, Bangladesh, and many other countries of the world.

In 1963 and 1965 there was an outbreak of this disease in India and many ducks died. Still, many ducks die from this disease every year.

8 Symptoms of Duck Plague

In the case of duck call plague, the following 8 symptoms along with some other symptoms are manifested. However, if these 8 symptoms of duck plague are considered, the disease can be easily identified.

  1. The ducks can’t stand it. He digs and walks.
  2. Does not want to swim, legs go numb.
  3. Thirst for water increases; But eating and drinking decreases.
  4. Feathers are ruffled and the duck is resting on its wings.
  5. The stool is thin. Sometimes the stool is green and yellow in color. Blood is often mixed with stool.
  6. When the incidence of the disease is high, sometimes the male duck’s reproductive organs come out.
  7. The autopsy revealed blood clots in the duck’s heart, liver, and ovaries.
  8. Sometimes the eyes water.

Treatment of Dak Plague

For duck plague disease, if the number of ducks is low or if it is a family duck farm, oxytetracycline groups such as Renamycin tablets or powder should be fed for 3-5 days according to the dosage.

If the number of ducks is high or if there is a commercial duck farm, then measures must be taken as per the advice of the Veterinary Surgeon in charge of the Upazila Livestock Office or the Upazila Livestock Officer.

If the duck has this disease, it is necessary to feed it two or more medicines.

Duck plague vaccine

Ducklings at 3 weeks of age should be given the 1st vaccination to prevent duck plague. The immunity of this vaccine is maintained for up to 6 months. So this vaccination should be given after 6 months.

If the disease occurs on the farm, the healthy ducks should be separated and vaccinated. The security of the farm should be ensured. Ducks should always be given clean water to drink.

Duck rearing is a very ancient practice at the family level in rural Bangladesh. There are a lot of ponds, canals, rivers, and canals in the country. Where the ducks are reared and can get almost half of their feed.
